Iterate with Coverage Notes

Get script-reader style notes and revise with purpose.

Coverage is a read of your pages, not a request for a new script. Paste the treatment or the draft. Ask for diagnosis. You rewrite. The partner does not get a second movie. If the note cannot point at a line, a beat, or a lie, it is not a note. It is taste.

What is coverage?

Studio coverage is a short packet with a fixed shape.

  • Restated logline
  • One-page synopsis
  • What works
  • What fails
  • Notes on character, structure, and dialogue
  • Recommend, consider, or pass against a rubric you set

Useful note on A New Hope

The farm is long if we do not feel the trap. Owen is the life Luke will not choose. If Uncle Owen is only grumpy, the Catalyst is a weather event. Fix: one beat where staying is smaller than leaving, before the droids arrive.

Useful note on The Godfather

The restaurant killing only works if Michael is still the man who said “that’s not me.” If he already talks like a don in scene two, the door that shuts on Kay has nowhere to go. Fix: protect the lie until the gun.

Useless note on either

“Raise the stakes. Sharpen the voice. Make Act Two pop.”

What to start with

  • Pages you wrote (treatment or draft)
  • The locked logline and the interview restatement
  • Want, need, and lie
  • Beat sheet
  • World constitution
  • A rubric of five tests, written before the model reads

Do not feed an outline the agent wrote and ask it to grade its own work. Coverage is a second pass on your choices.

Three readers, same pages

Run three passes. Change only the job.

Story editor.Dramatic question. Agency. Midpoint turn. Cost of the climax. Does the lie still operate.

Bored audience.Where did I check out. What was I promised at minute twelve. When was I paid.

Production reader.Unfilmable action lines. Extra bodies in the frame. Night exteriors you cannot afford. Time of day and wardrobe that will break later. Jay

Cap the rewrite

The agent may:

  • Quote the weakest passage
  • Rank seven notes by story damage
  • Offer a fix you can try in twenty minutes

The agent may not:

  • Write a new Act Two
  • Replace your dialogue in bulk
  • Change the protagonist to “solve” a structure hole

A shrug midpoint is a beat-sheet problem. Send it back to that lesson. A mushy lead is a bible problem. A setting that never bites is a world problem. Coverage that invents a new plot is the partner taking the chair.

Worked swap (keep the pages, change the note)

Base logline: After a pop star’s bodyguard witnesses a murder, he must keep her alive long enough to testify, or the syndicate erases them both.

Note that helps

Midpoint is a chase. It does not raise the want or expose the lie. He still believes this is a job. She still believes fame is armor. Fix: one public choice that makes the lie expensive. Twenty-minute try: she fires him on live TV, or he calls the police and she stops him.

Note that starts a new pile

What if he is her estranged father and the syndicate is a record label. Also cut the tour.

The first note points at a beat you already mapped. The second throws away the engine. Keep the first. Bin the second.

Kill test

A filmmaker holds a torn coverage packet up to the campfire light while a small tracked robot points a pen at one highlighted line, marked-up pages on the rock below and a cinema camera on a tripod in the dark pines behind.

Make the agent argue against its own packet.

  • Which notes are topics (“stakes,” “pacing”) with no page number?
  • Which notes would still apply if you pasted a different script?
  • Did any note ask you to abandon want, need, or arena?
  • If you took only the top three notes, would the logline still be true?
  • Can you do the top fix in twenty minutes without new characters?

If the packet needs a new lead to work, it is not coverage. It is a pitch.

Using AI as a writing partner

Paste your pages. State the rubric. Demand quotes.

Run that brief three times. Change only the reader line (story editor, bored audience, production reader).

Take the notes that send you back to a page you already have. Rewrite those pages yourself. Then run coverage again on the new draft. That loop is the work. When the packet cannot find a hole you are willing to defend, stop and write the next draft without the agent in the chair.
